I am damn lucky to know the people I do.

Case in point: Fresca
"Body-image advice for American women often sounds like advice to colonized people on how to assimilate better into the master culture:
work harder to please, and you will be rewarded.

"And so we will, but it will take our valuable energy, and it will not be on our terms. That is a recipe for domestication, not liberation."

Sure, I could get thinner. I could put some thought into my wardrobe and get up an hour earlier to do hair and makeup. I could have an image. But those are hours of exercise and food obsession and wage-earning that I could use for something I feel is vitally important. Energy I could put into something that makes me feel good and productive, rather than helpless and ugly. Something that might make a difference in the long run.

An unrelated note via Making Light: Gin, Television, and Social Surplus, because I have the feeling it will feed my thesis somehow.
We're going to look at every place that a reader or a listener or a viewer or a user has been locked out, has been served up passive or a fixed or a canned experience, and ask ourselves, "If we carve out a little bit of the cognitive surplus and deploy it here, could we make a good thing happen?" And I'm betting the answer is yes.

Something I try to stress here...

1. your wardrobe is fine.

2. Your hair is fine.

3. you don't need makeup.

Why do women insist that they need these things? (I know...I know the ultimate answer...) Its stupid. (No, not they're stupid...the societal influences that create the perception is stupid.)

Does this make sense or did I just shoot myself in the foot again?

Well, I live next door to your universe, and it's honestly very awesome that the people hanging over that fence aren't tut-tutting about my lack of "professional" wardrobe. But my universe buts up against lots of other property, where the neighbors say things like "Wear what you want, but don't whine to me if you don't get that job" and "You'd be so much prettier if you just..." and "I can tell by your appearance that you'd be healthier if..."

I recognize that my position is actually pretty good. If I feel attacked, I'm secure in knowing I have allies at my back. But not everyone does, and so I persist in writing and quoting and saying these things over and over, so that those without allies might find stronger ground to defend themselves.

You know...

One of the many many many reasons I like you is that you are able to explain things in the language I speak.

But not everyone does, and so I persist in writing and quoting and saying these things over and over, so that those without allies might find stronger ground to defend themselves.

And I understand, comprehend and agree. :)

Thus, you did not shoot yourself in the foot again. You may have drawn it prematurely, though. :') I am saying this from a position of strength just now.

Oh, I know...I was merely addressing my general ...not confusion... but annoyance with society.

And I think of you as much more fashion conscious than I.

I exercise because I feel better. It's still hard to keep it up.
